Mount Royal is the deep extension of a vastly eroded ancient volcanic complex<\/a>, which was probably active about 125 million years ago.[2]<\/a><\/sup> As a result, some tourist guidebooks, such as the Michelin Guide<\/a> to Montreal<\/i>, state that it is an extinct volcano<\/a>. The mountain, along with the other mountains of the Monteregian Hills<\/a>, was formed when the North American Plate<\/a> moved westward over the New England hotspot<\/a>[2]<\/a><\/sup> by a process known as intrusion<\/a>: magma<\/a> intruded into the sedimentary rocks<\/a> underneath the area, producing at least eight igneous stocks. The main rock type is a gabbro<\/a>composed of pyroxene<\/a>, olivine<\/a> and variable amounts of plagioclase<\/a>. During and after the main stage of intrusion, the gabbros and surrounding rocks were intruded by a series of volcanic dikes<\/a> and sills<\/a>. Subsequently, the surrounding softer sedimentary rock was eroded<\/a>, leaving behind the resistant igneous rock<\/a> that forms the mountain.<\/p>\n Explored Mount Royale Park, excellent hiking through the forests. Then took Dash to Old Montreal to walk along the old streets. Saint-Paul street closed off to vehicular traffic, had lunch at a very nice restaurant.
